He may not have have won an Emmy last Sunday, but Anthony Hopkins‘ riveting performance as Dr. Robert Ford on Westworld helped make the first season a critical and commercial success for HBO. As the founder and director of Westworld, he ruled the park with an iron fist and appeared to be the chief obstacle to the hosts gaining consciousness. As we saw in the finale, however, Ford was actually helping the hosts all along. His sacrifice at the end of season one was the catalyst for the host rebellion, led by Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood). Ford died to set them free.
Many fans question whether Dolores actually killed Ford in the finale. Perhaps he created a host version of himself – either to take the fall so the real Ford could live on, or as a replacement for his human body. Although we haven’t received any concrete evidence of Hopkins’ involvement in season two, there have been rumors that we will see him again.
If an interview posted to the Norwegian news site Dagbladet yesterday is correct, Hopkins will be reprising his role as Dr. Ford next season. In the article, actress Liv Ullmann reveals that she will be starring opposite Hopkins in an upcoming film directed by Rupert Friend, but that the project has been put on hold because of his obligations to Westworld.
We have been unable to verify this information with any other sources, so take it with a grain of salt. If Hopkins does return, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Dr. Ford survived. Given that Jimmi Simpson (William) has confirmed his involvement, we know there will be more flashbacks – or host memories – in season two. Perhaps we’ll see more of the park’s early days, or more of Dr. Ford’s history with William as he evolved into the Man in Black.
